With most US workforce expected to work remotely well into 2021, demand for infrastructure leadership and support remains strong. Now more than ever, technologists are needed to build out and support the critical infrastructure necessary to ensure success when working remotely. That said, Software Developers and Project Managers remain firmly in their top-of-the-list slots as the demands of digital transformation initiatives continue. Consequently, in many cases they’ve been re-imagined to meet the evolving needs born out of the pandemic.

You’ll also see improvement in other occupations related to operational and strategic business demands, such as Java Developers, Senior Business Analysts, Product Managers, Software Product Managers, and more. The increased rate of Senior Software Developer roles is an indication that employers are looking to build out their development teams from the top down and that mid-level roles will soon follow.

The increase in demand for Back End Developers, Data Scientists, and Software Product Managers suggests that organizations are shifting their focus back toward longer-term and larger projects put on hold at the start of the pandemic. High demand for Python Developers suggests companies are looking to resume business as usual, focusing on data analytics and software development, which were fast-growing roles before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Top Occupations by Tech Job Apply Rate
Application data from Appcast shows the job-apply rates of each technical role. The job-apply rate is the percentage of apply clicks that result in a completed application. The graph below shows the technology jobs with the highest apply rates in Q3.
Roles such as Software Developers and Business Analysts are historically high-volume positions, experiencing significant growth over the years. Dice points out that occupations such as Network Engineers, Data Analysts, and Cyber Security Engineers have traditionally ranked lower. However, the job-apply rates for these roles are experiencing high demand due to the pandemic.
