Stamford Staffing Firm plays Business-Critical role for Local Corporations seeking Technology Workers
Updated: July 16, 2021
Stamford, CT – Benchmark IT, a Stamford based IT Staffing firm, was recently honored at the annual TechServe Alliance conference, the IT staffing industry’s leading trade and legislative advocacy association, with their annual “Excellence Award.” The award recognizes IT staffing and solutions firms that have demonstrated outstanding performance, team productivity and dedication to continuous improvement over the past year.
A recent “US News and World Report” study ranked Software Developer as the Number 1 Best Job in their 2018 Best Jobs study, but supply continues to be low. . “Businesses are facing a universal shortage of IT talent,” says John Bemis, president and founder of Benchmark IT. “On average, Benchmark places more than 120 IT professionals in local tech jobs annually with demand steadily increasing.” In 2017, Benchmark IT’s team doubled its staff as the requirements to support local businesses grew two-fold. Placements range from senior level CTO and CIO executives to software developers, project managers and business analysts. “Tech unemployment is currently at 1.3%— an all-time low,” said Bemis. “Technology drives the local and national economy and the need for new and enhanced technology skills changes rapidly. Right now, the most in-demand skills we seek are software developers, agile project managers, and cyber security and cloud computing engineers, to name a few. Looking ahead, in-demand skill sets will include Blockchain developers, Machine Learning Engineers and IoT specialists.”
Due to the pervasive talent shortage, professional staffing firms like Benchmark IT play a business-critical role. “The hard news is there are thousands of open jobs and not nearly enough skilled workers,” said Allison Junquera, Director of Recruiting. Towards that end, Benchmark IT’s team is committed to growing and educating the future domestic technology workforce. “We are working diligently with the community on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education, as well as with local high schools to encourage kids towards computer science degrees, and with career counselors at local colleges to place graduates into technology roles,” said Nancy LaPerla, VP of Marketing.
In May, Bemis attended the 17th annual TechServe Alliance Legislative Conference in Washington D.C. seeking to urge Connecticut’s US Senate and Congress members to uphold existing H-1B Visa regulations in an effort to retain US-based technology jobs. Benchmark IT was the only Connecticut technology staffing firm to lobby on behalf of employees working on and seeking H-1B Visas here. “There are 100,000’s of guest workers in the US,” said Bemis “We don’t have enough qualified American workers right now or in the near future to fill their jobs. The potential risk of limiting H1-B visa workers means more outsourcing, which means job loss here in the US.” Many workers are currently working on H-1B Visas but live in and contribute to the community.
Benchmark IT’s chief focus is to help grow area businesses by staffing them with qualified local candidates. “Commuting is tough today,” said Bemis. “Our clients want to be assured their new hires and most valued employees are happy and productive and that a long commute is not a deterrent. Benchmark prides its business on maintaining long-standing relationships with top talent within a commutable area; Fairfield, New Haven, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Bergen Counties.
“We are keenly candidate-focused and maintain close relationships with them,” said Allison Junquera, Director of Recruiting. “We help mid-market and growth-phase businesses manage their time, vet their talent and staff up for long- and short-term projects and full-time roles.” Most candidates in the technology field are currently fully employed and consequently not active job seekers. This makes the recruiting process that much more challenging.”
