Over the past several months, we’ve spoken to hundreds of IT candidates and hiring managers about virtual hiring and onboarding. Not only have we helped our clients through the process, we’ve also done it ourselves! This past July, we welcomed long-time IT recruiting pro, Anne King, to the Benchmark IT family. Anne is a Senior Account Executive at Benchmark IT and brings a strong background in all aspects technology recruitment to our team. Read on to learn how Anne got into IT staffing, what she finds the most exciting about working with clients and staff, and why she chooses to continue her career with Benchmark IT.

What got you into technology staffing?
My first job in technology staffing was working as a recruiter while I was in graduate school at Teachers College, Columbia University. The company I was working for at the time allowed me to specialize in IT. I have a degree in Organizational Psychology, with a concentration in human resources, which lead me to become interested in the staffing industry. After being a recruiter for a couple of years, I began working on new account development. I started to get my own clients as well as recruit for them. Over time, my client list grew, and I needed to hire recruiters. This ultimately led to managing a staff of 10-12 recruiters dedicated to fulfilling the requirements of my clients. Currently, I work as a Senior Account Executive at Benchmark IT and it has been a great experience so far.

I didn’t have a great interest in technology before I started in IT staffing. Once I began recruiting, my interest in IT grew, and I enjoyed its many aspects. I liked the diversity of applicants and how they were from many different countries and had unique skillsets. I also enjoyed getting to know the clients, observing their businesses, seeing what new software they developed, and its impact on customers. All of this was very interesting to me in my first recruiting job, and my interests grew as I moved up within the industry.

What do you think is the most exciting thing about working with clients and candidates on their technology?
Meeting new people is what I find the most exciting about working with clients and candidates. I’ve met so many amazing people. It’s also very satisfying to be able to give someone who needs a job a great opportunity. Calling a candidate and telling them about a great job opportunity for them is a rewarding feeling. It’s also a special feeling when you make the client happy by giving them the perfect match for their role and company. Making that match and getting a candidate the job, they wanted is very gratifying and exciting.

It’s also very exciting for me to see specific projects before they are released to the public. For instance, many of our financial sector clients have exciting projects in global banking, online banking apps, etc. It’s exciting to see our candidates working on these projects and developing it into something useful for the public.

What was it like joining Benchmark IT during the pandemic?
Interviewing for a new job during the pandemic was initially challenging, but it quickly became “normal.” The first round of meetings was probably the most difficult for me, but it became more comfortable as I virtually met with each member of the team. The hardest part was probably the technical training that had to be done virtually. If that piece had been done in person, I think it would have been easier. My training/onboarding was set up so it allowed me to spend a good chunk of time with each team member individually. Even though it was not in person, I felt I got to know everyone pretty well and begin to develop relationships.

It’s natural to be apprehensive about starting a new job virtually. However, a well-planned onboarding schedule, and one-on-one time with all key stakeholders makes the process much easier. It’s even easier in some ways since you get uninterrupted time on each call, which may not always happen in an office environment.

Now that things are easing up in our area, I look forward to meeting my team members for coffee, lunch, or dinner in the coming weeks and months.

What is it about Benchmark IT that makes you want to come into work every day?
One of the biggest factors of what makes me want to go into work every day is the people who work at Benchmark. The recruiters and the account managers are some of the nicest people I have ever met in terms of individuals and as a group. Everyone in the office, and now during Zoom meetings, are so nice and supportive of each other. We all work really well together, and this makes for a great work environment.
