Meet John Wilson! John is a Senior Account Executive at Benchmark IT. We sat down with John to discuss how he got into technology staffing in Connecticut, the excitement of working with clients and staff on their technology, and why he chooses to make his career with Benchmark IT – Technology Talent.
What Got You into Technology Staffing?
How I started my career in technology staffing is a funny story. After graduating from college, I had a plan of going back to school to get my master’s degree because, at the time, I wanted to be a teacher. A few friends of mine had joined staffing companies and asked if I wanted to do the same. At the time, I didn’t know a lot about the staffing industry, but my friends convinced me to take a chance. Initially, I wasn’t sure where I was going to be placed within the industry, but ultimately I was placed in IT staffing and I’ve been here ever since.
Prior to my first job in IT, I didn’t have any experience in technology; however, since becoming involved in this industry, my interest of technology has grown immensely. Over the years, I have learned so much and I continue to learn more every day. On a daily basis, I am working with different technologies and different skillsets, which makes my job very exciting.
What Do You Think is Exciting About Working with Clients and Consultants on Their Technology?
Working in technology staffing in Connecticut is exciting because of how everything is constantly changing and improving. My job requires me to be continuously learning and interested. Additionally, working with clients and consultants every day is always exciting. Every client is different. Each has their own challenges and unique skillsets that they seek in their candidates. It’s continuously changing and updating, and no job requisition is ever the same. With each position and company there are different cultures and personalities that need to be addressed for both the company and the candidate to be successful. In addition to learning technology, it is essential to learn how to navigate the specific needs of the clients. Every day is exciting, whether it’s working with current clients and consultants, or with a new account and needing to figure it out and grow it.
There have been instances where we had clients that were facing technology challenges, and they needed to bring on highly qualified teams. We were able to deliver exactly what they needed because we take the time to understand a client’s specific hiring needs, their technology challenges, the project(s) they are working on, and the types of candidates that are a good fit for their environment. These situations are not only exciting, but very rewarding. I enjoy seeing a client accomplish great things because of the team we built for them. I particularly enjoy seeing those people you placed evolve in their careers. Over the years, I have seen many men and womens’ technology careers grow, and they have become good friends of mine. It’s always exciting to see people that have started out as technicians and have climbed their way to Director or VP. I love being a part of the process of someone achieving their personal and professional goals.
What is it About Benchmark IT That Makes You Want to Come into Work Every Day?
Working at Benchmark IT is great, not only because of the great work we do, but also largely because of the people I work with in the office. In the past, I have worked in environments where the culture wasn’t as friendly, and Benchmark IT has an amazing work culture. Every employee looks out for each other. Every one wants to succeed, and they want every one else to succeed just as much. This makes it very easy to come into work every day.
