Wednesday, June 17, 2020

Career setbacks come in many forms — you're passed over for a promotion, a major project implodes, you're officially reprimanded, or worse, you're flat-out fired. For most IT professionals, it's not a matter of if there will be a setback, but when and how often your career suddenly shifts into reverse.
If that wasn't enough, the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent recession created a wave of layoffs and furloughs, heightened uncertainty and re-assessment, and widespread job insecurity across the Tri-State area.
On June 17, Women with WITS hosted an informative and interactive Meetup about Overcoming Career Obstacles. Anne LaPerla, Senior Program Manager, Information Security at Gartner, shared her own story about overcoming career obstacles in her early tech career, and how she made the most of a bad situation. Then, we divided into smaller groups where participants shared specific stories and questions about their career setbacks and found solutions to their career obstacles.
